The Ballon d’Or (Golden Ball) award is a big deal. Also known as the European Footballer of the Year award, the Ballon d’Or is awarded by major French magazine France Football (owned by newspaper L’Equipe) to the player deemed to have displayed the best performance during the previous year. The current holder of the Ballon d’Or is Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi, who won the award in 2021 for a record 7th time.
This year’s Ballon d’Or winner will be announced next month, and for the first time it will be accompanied by an NFT drop, powered by Tezos.

The Ballon d’Or NFT Collection, which dropped today, is based on pyrite, the precious stone that forms the base of the physical trophy. Owners of the NFTs will get a chance to attend the ceremony itself, which will be held in Paris on October 17. In addition to the NFT Collection, the Ballon d’Or award itself will also be issued as an NFT, minted on the Tezos blockchain.
